UNISCRIBE usp10.dll version 1.471.4063.0 Feb 5, 2004 13.42 413 KB This is the version of the Uniscribe file supplied with later updates to Word 11 (Office 2003). If you have Word 11, probably you don't need it; even the previous version supplied with Word 11, (1.471.4030.0, July 27, 2003, 07:18, 403 KB), is quite OK for all Hebrew. Word 12 (Office 2007) comes with a version of Uniscribe that produces faults if you are using especially complex Hebrew. The version of Uniscribe supplied with Windows Vista is similar, but can't be replaced -- though at some time Microsoft will update it. The version of usp10.dll in this zip file is fully functional only in Windows XP or Vista. It will work, but only partially, in Windows 2000. INSTALLATION NOTEPAD -- THE EASIEST OPTION You can test this copy of Uniscribe without installing it in the system. Make a new folder and copy usp10.dll to it. Also copy the main program file for Notepad, C:\Windows\Notepad.exe (or C:\Winnt\Notepad.exe) to this folder, and set it to use the font that is being tested. Any text file that is also in this folder will now be controlled by the new version of Uniscribe. FOR WORD 2002 -2007 -- STILL EASY Word 2002 and later do not use the system copy of Uniscribe, but maintain an independent copy for their own use. This copy affects only Office, and does not control text in any other application. Word 2000 does not have a private copy of Uniscribe, and uses the system copy (see next section). Word 2002's copy of usp10.dll is in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Office10. Word 2003's copy of usp10.dll is in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Office11. Word 2007's copy of usp10.dll is in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12. To replace Word's private copy of Uniscribe: This applies only to users of Word 2002-7, NOT to users of Word 2000. Do this when Word is not running. In the folder listed above, there should be a copy of an older version of usp10.dll. Rename it as usp10.old. Copy the new usp10.dll to this folder. Word does not replace the system copy of usp10.dll when it is installed. If you want to use this version of usp10.dll to control the display of text in web browsers and other applications in Windows XP, you will need to replace the existing system copy of the file. If you have Word 2000 you will need to do this anyway. FOR THE COMPLETE SYSTEM -- A BIT HARDER This works only for Windows 2000 and XP. It is impossible, as far as we know, to replace the file in Vista (although it is in the same place as described for XP). To make the Uniscribe file work systemwide you should copy it to any folder and install it by the method given below. The file is in constant use by Windows, so it has to be installed in a special way. To install the file in Windows XP: Copy usp10.dll to any folder. Rename it as usp10.new. In order to see the extension in the folder window, you will need to go to Tools - Folder Options - View and deselect the option 'Hide extensions for known file types.' Move usp10.new to C:\Windows\System32. Restart the computer. As soon as Windows begins to load, press and hold down F8. This will make the startup options appear. Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt. The computer will start quite slowly. Wait for the prompt screen to appear. Type these lines, hitting Enter at the end of each line: cd\windows\system32 ren usp10.dll usp10.old ren usp10.new usp10.dll exit The prompt screen will disappear. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del, and choose the option to shut down and restart the computer. To install the file in Windows 2000: Copy usp10.dll to any folder. Rename it as usp10.new. In order to see the extension in the folder window, you will need to go to Tools - Folder Options - View and deselect the option 'Hide extensions for known file types.' Move usp10.new to C:\Winnt\System32. Restart the computer. As soon as Windows begins to load, press and hold down F8. This will make the startup options appear. Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt. The computer will start quite slowly. Wait for the prompt screen to appear. Type these lines, hitting Enter at the end of each line: cd\winnt\system32 ren usp10.dll usp10.old ren usp10.new usp10.dll exit The prompt screen will disappear. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del, and choose the option to shut down and restart the computer. FOR INDIVIDUAL APPLICATIONS -- USEFUL IN VISTA Many applications that can use Uniscribe will automatically use a copy of usp10.dll that is in the same folder as their main .exe program, and if such a copy is present, will ignore the system copy. In Vista, where you can't replace the system copy of Uniscribe, you may be able to get results in this way. To use a new version of usp10.dll to control the display of text in such an application, simply put a copy of usp10.dll in the folder where the main .exe program is. If there is an existing copy of usp10.dll in this folder, rename it usp10.old.
